The standard philanthropic model is this: an organization applies for a grant, monies are given, and the relationship ends. Venture philanthropy takes a different approach using a model similar to that of venture capital — the organization applying for a grant not only receives funding, but gets a partnership as well. This partnership supplements financial capital with intellectual capital such as consulting and strategic advice from business leaders in the community.

The founders saw an opportunity in the venture philanthropy model to become specific and strategic in charitable giving to ensure a lasting impact in the community, especially in the lives of children. The Phoenix Foundation helps non-profit organizations that are already doing good work move needed programs from vision to reality by supplying needed funds, strategic planning, capacity building, and program sustainability.

Phoenix Venture Philanthropy Foundation challenges sponsored organizations to improve, expand, and build capacity for growth and sustainability, encouraging it to develop tangible measurements, creating an environment that will inspire donors and foster positive change.
