The Canterbury School of Florida Marine Studies Program

The Marine Studies Program at The Canterbury School of Florida is comprehensive school-wide program to promote literacy, awareness, and understanding of the marine environment. This program includes class work, community service, field trips, habitat restoration efforts, research cruises, a study of the local natural environment, and partnerships with local institutions such as Eckerd College, Tampa Bay Watch, and the University of South Florida Marine Science Program.

The centerpiece of the program will be the new Marine Studies Education Center.  This building, dedicated to the marine studies program, will house a state-of-the-art laboratory and classroom, complete with laptop lab, interactive SMART boards, and aquarium touch tank, microscopes, a weather station and a kayak fleet.  The Marine Studies and Environmental curriculum, created for students from Pre-kindergarten to Grade Twelve, is the only curriculum of its kind, not only in Florida, but also in the nation.  This program will encourage and inspire faculty and students to explore all four fields of oceanography, integrating marine geology, marine biology, marine chemistry and physical oceanography for unique hands-on experiences.

The Phoenix Foundation is working closely with school administrators to build both capacity and sustainability in the program and facilities.
